TE WHAKATUTUKI PLAN

A Plan for the Social, Cultural, Economic and Physical Redevelopment of Wharekawa Marae, Whakatīwai, Kaiaua

Goal

To successfully redevelop Wharekawa Marae whereby it will be renewed as a significant contributor to meeting the social, cultural, economic and physical needs of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga (particularly those hapū and whānau of Wharekawa) in the next fifty years. The successful redevelopment of Wharekawa Marae will make a significant contribution to fostering and uplifting the mana of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga.

Redevelopment

Social Redevelopment

The marae is renewed as a deeply significant ‘vehicle’ for fostering the mana, identity, cohesion, unity and whanaungatanga of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga.

Cultural Redevelopment

The marae is renewed as a meaningful and distinctive ‘cultural/tikanga space’ of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga.

Economic Redevelopment

The marae is a ‘platform’ for harnessing the Ngāti Pāoa Whanaunga by
creative enterprises, including for-profit/business activities.

Physical Redevelopment

Introducing improvements to the existing buildings, facilities and environs (and creating new buildings and structures as required) which expresses and aligns with the mana of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga.

  • Conduct an investigation concerning the potential to create marae based for-profit/business activities leading to marae self-sustainability.
