E nga rangatira o Ngati Paoa me Ngati Whanaunga, Wharekawa Marae has since inception of Alert 1 COVID19 disseminated information to whanau around the closure of Wharekawa Marae to any grouping, to ensure health and safety and whanau wellbeing.

Wharekawa Marae quickly responded by creating a draft Pandemic Policy to ensure these messages were adhered to immediately and into the future. This is to enlighten our Ngati Paoa, Ngati Whanaunga whanau whanui that Wharekawa Marae has undertaken a marae led approach to COVID19 ensuring our whanau needs from Waimango to Ngatea are taken care of. We quickly identified and assembled whanau leads that reside in these areas to be the conduit between assessing whanau need and agency delivery.

From this initial phase our marae identified the need to support our whānaunga at Makomako marae and immediately engaged. Wharekawa marae are co-ordinating this process and in collaboration with the HDC, TCDC, Te Korowai Hauora and HMTB facilitating;

Flu vaccination mobile clinic at Wharekawa Marae Friday 27thMarch 2020 in conjunction with Te Korowai Hauora services – 47 whānau

Organise water tank refills for whanau with HDC/TCDC

Organise whanau packs and food parcels with Te Korowai Hauora Services and HMTB Supply drinking water to whanau who were in desperate need as the water tank supply is currently in extremely high demand due to the drought

Organise a skip through HDC to service our whanau needs during the change of waste collection timetable over the next 4-6 weeks.
